This menu reminds me of the time Brother Dave & I found a quarter .. then walked down to the corner store and bought a thick chocolate malt. Check out those prices.

Amazing, isn't it? I shudder to think how it will be when our grandkids become adults.
ReplyDeleteTen dollar milkshakes, maybe?
ReplyDeleteIn the 1960s Shirley and I would buy our week's worth of groceries for $20. Nowadays when we go back to the store for a loaf of bread, some milk, and a few other things, we drop twenty dollars on that alone. Back in the 60s it would only break a five dollar bill.
ReplyDeleteYes, those "50s" prices are amazing. And I remember our finding that quarter and getting the thick chocolate malt.
In 1966, Rosie & I spent $12 a week for groceries. No pop or junk food.
ReplyDeleteOf course, my paycheck was much smaller back then.
I think you make a good point, e.Craig. While things do cost more now, people also earned less then.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I don't think that salary increases have been proportionate to cost of living increases.
I can't recall the source, but it seems I've read somewhere that the discretionary portion of people's incomes is greater today than it was back then. It doesn't always feel that way, does it.
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't have anything to compare it to, but you're right ... it sure doesn't seem that would accurate.
ReplyDeleteA quarter use to by quiet a bit of stuff back then. My brother, Sister Stephen, and I use to go to the Saturday matinee at the theater and watch two features, two cartoons and great previews and news shorts - and sit through them as many times as we wanted - for 10 cents each.
ReplyDeleteSorry, the point of my last comment is that with a quarter we could get into the movies and get a coke, too.
ReplyDeleteSo .. what are you REALLY trying to tell us, Coffeypot?
ReplyDelete1964-Gas was 28-32 cents a gallon at the station at Fifth & Wayne-You would sometimes get a free steak knife or tumbler with a fill up. Got a whole set of six of both-My '55 Olds would drive all week long on about $5.00 to $6.00. Cruise the Belmont Parkmoor lookin for Chicks.
ReplyDeleteNow we know why the chic[ken] crossed the road.
